jan middendorp is a dutch writer and designer living in berlin. he was the founding editor and art director of the fontshop benelux magazine druk (1999 – 2002), and has contributed to many international magazines including items, eye, typographic, experimenta and etapes. he also wrote and designed the award-winning book „lettered, the alphabets of clotilde olyff” (2000) and collaborated on monographs about letterror and ren� knip. this year, a group of international publishers will publish the book „made with fontfont” which he edited in collaboration with erik spiekermann and fontshop international.

as a designer, he works for the belgian publishing company lannoo, and various clients in the cultural field.

the lecture: type for peace � would the world be a happier place if typography and graphic design would be a widely popular form of entertainment or worship, instead of just being the obsession of a mildly happy few? we examine the possibilities of type as a strategy for (cultural) survival focusing on local type projects from holland, iran, germany, denmark, tobago, egypt.
