christopher burke reflects on the conflicts and continuities in tschichold’s work. the tensions between modern and traditional approaches to typography were exemplified in his work during five decades of the twentieth century. he seems to have had two personas, each with views that apparently contradicted the other. tschichold had a double nature in several respects: he was not only a practising typographer but also simultaneously a historian and theorist of typography. and not least, he was a lifelong collector of typographical material, as reflected in the exhibition „tschichold in st. gallen”.
christopher burke ist typograph, schriftentwerfer und schrifthistoriker. vor seiner dissertation in typographie und graphischer kommunikation an der university of reading, england, arbeitete er bei monotype typography. 1996 bis 2001 lehrte er an der university of reading, wo er den master-lehrgang in schriftdesign aufbaute und auch leitete. derzeit ist er wissenschaftlicher mitarbeiter am projekt isotype revisited am institut für typographie und graphische kommunikation.
sein buch „paul renner: the art of typography” erschien 1998 und „active literature: jan tschichold and new typography” 2007 (beide bei hyphen press). er ist mitherausgeber zweier bücher über otto neurath und isotype, als auch einer geschichte der monotype corporation. er hat vier schriften entworfen: celeste, celeste sans, pragma und parable.
