the workshop will be held in english and german

you will bind your own book (or several if you are keen and work fast). for drawings, notes, as a diary. you can choose between a swiss paperback with an 8-page cardboard cover and a hardcover book in half-linen, both thread-stitched – we will have samples ready for you to look at.

in order to save time, we will bring all the material you need cut to size: two kinds of paper for the core, backing paper and cover cardboard in different colours, cardboard for the book covers, as well as needles, thread, glue and everything else that is needed on the way to the finished book. if you want, you can of course also use your own material. please note: all materials should run parallel to the spines. participants of the workshop will receive a tool checklist in advance.

Babsi Daum

born 1966 in karlsruhe/germany, lives in vienna; 1988–1993 studies at the university of applied arts vienna, since then freelance in the fields of graphic art, book and paper art, art installation. walter koschatzky prize 1993, bavarian staatspreis and talent prize 1996; 2001 birth of daughter paula; 2010 co-founder of the artist group o.r.t.; numerous exhibitions in austria and abroad, exhibition series ›arbeit in auslage‹ since 2008.

you probably know that you don't ›buy‹ fonts, you ›license‹ them… but what does that mean? doesn’t that sound scary? in this three hour practicum we will discuss the various philosophical approaches to font licensing and learn to be more comfortable with licensing fonts. all are welcome, whether you be a graphic designer or font designer.

beyond the block: a typographic workshop on ›de-square‹ hangul

east asian scripts – chinese, japanese, and korean – have long shared the principle of composing characters within a square frame. hangul, the korean script created in the 15th century, inherited this structure under the influence of chinese writing. however, since the mid-20th century, korean designers have explored ways to break free from the square, experimenting with modular and non-linear layouts for hangul type design – what we call ›de-square‹ hangul. in this 90-minute workshop, participants will learn the basic structure of hangul and its historical relationship to the square, and then explore how it can be reimagined. using a set of geometric jamo cards – modular shapes representing consonants and vowels – each participant will design their own name in a free-form, deconstructed hangul composition.

Kay Jun

kay jun is a design writer, researcher, lecturer, and publisher based in daegu, south korea. she is the author of several books, including ›world’s art directors 10‹ (2009) and ›world’s book designers 10‹ (2016), and a contributor to ›graphic design is (…) not innocent‹ (valiz, 2022) and ›photography bound‹ (silvana, 2023). her recent book, ›graphic critique: hangul typography, publishing and activism since the 1970s‹ (2025), attempts to narrate the history of korean graphic design. through eleven essays, it sketches the contemporary graphic design landscape in korea. she is also actively involved in editorial and curatorial practices through the independent photobook publishing project aprilsnow press.

Jaewan Jeong

jeong jaewan worked as a book designer at minumsa publishing house in seoul after studying visual communication design at hongik university,  he has long been interested in street letters, which he collects, researches, and transforms into his artistic practice. he has held several solo exhibitions focusing on book design, street typography, and hangul lettering. currently, he teaches typography and book design in the department of visual communication design at yeungnam university in daegu, while also leading the book design for the photobook publisher aprilsnow press, through which he received the best book design from korea award for two of its titles. he is a member of agi (alliance graphique internationale) since 2017.

Georg Seifert

bauhaus university graduate georg seifert (b. 1978 in halle an der saale, germany) is a type designer and a software developer. his typeface families graublau sans and graublau slab have become international bestsellers. he co-developed the typeface for the new berlin airport. he is most well known, however, for the font editor ›glyphs‹, first released in 2011. Seifert lives and works in berlin.

Rainer Erich Scheichelbauer

studied philosophy and dutch studies at the university of vienna. teaches typography and type design at ›die graphische‹, co-owner of the company glyphs, for which he also gives workshops and international lectures, founded schriftlabor in 2015, where he and his team provide technical support to type designers as well as create original type designs. for the tga he has translated gerard ungers (1942–2018) ›terwijl je leest‹ (›while you’re reading‹), a translation of gerrit noordzijs (1931–2022) ›de streek‹ (›the stroke: theory of writing‹) is in preparation.
