from flat-brush calligraphy style to a font, from an old imperfect type to a fresh bespoke typeface — these transformations require an intention and action from the designer.
interpretation is vera’s method, her challenge and joy in working on contemporary designs rooted in the multilayered culture of european scripts. in calligraphy and type design vera explores the unique properties of each medium: she experiments with transparency, colour, and intersections in letters created with a flat brush, and she takes advantage of the one and only optimal shape of a letter in type design, thoroughly balancing black and white. she is going to talk about her design projects, enlarging details and bringing the ideas and their development into focus.
vera evstafieva is an independent type designer, calligrapher, and cyrillic expert based in cambridge, uk. designing letters since the early 2000s. vera’s working on such wide-ranging projects as custom fonts, logotypes, lettering, and calligraphy, and her original type designs won such awards as tdc2, modern cyrillic and communication arts magazine competition.
among her text and display type designs are: amalta, als direct, birra lambic, moscow university, rossica, lilienthal grotesk, apriori. cyrillics for literata, playpen sans, adelle, postea, futura 100, and other fonts for typetogether. vera is a type designer passionate about exploring historical sources, both typographic and calligraphic. she is a full member of letter exchange society and has served as a jury member for international type design competitions, including granshan.
