r2 lecture examines typography as a conceptual and spatial practice within our work, spanning both commissioned design projects and artistic production. rather than treating type as a neutral carrier of information, we approach text as an active agent that structures meaning, shapes spatial and visual hierarchies, and responds to context through form and scale. our practice moves between two-dimensional composition and the physical construction of letterforms, including typographic elements realised at architectural scale and in materials such as concrete. through a selection of projects, the lecture reflects on how typography operates across media as a system of representation, a compositional tool, and a spatial presence. it proposes an understanding of typographic practice as inherently situated, continuously negotiated through the relationship between content, context and form.
lizá défossez ramalho (troyes, france) is a designer and artist. she works in collaboration with artur rebelo, with whom she co-founded r2. her practice lies at the intersection of design, art, and architecture, with a strong focus on typography. défossez ramalho has received a number of international awards and honours, including the brno biennale grand prix and several premier awards from the international society of typographic designers and the society for environmental graphic design.
some of her original pieces are held in international museum collections such as the museum für gestaltung, zürich, the museum of modern art, toyama, and the musée des arts décoratifs, paris. she has developed a wide range of projects, from dam signage on the douro river (with souto de moura – architects) to extensive branding that includes typography on building ceilings (casa do conto), and a complex museum graphic identity spanning more than 14 locations (porto city museum). recent projects include the branding for évora 2027, european capital of culture.
lizá ramalho holds a phd from the faculty of fine arts — university of barcelona, supported by a scholarship from the foundation for science and technology (portugal). she has been a member of agi since 2007.
