this talk will show examples of the way books have been designed to support children learning to read, looking at how typography and the interaction between text and pictures serve to meet the needs of beginner readers. as part of this sue walker will introduce a less well-known aspect of marie neurath’s work – an unpublished scheme for teaching reading. her popular books that explain history, geography and science will feature in the second part of the talk.

sue walker is professor of typography at the university of reading and director of the ahrc-funded design star doctoral training centre. her research interests include analysis and description of graphic language, in particular the relationship between prescription and practice in everyday documents, typographic design for children and information design in public service. she is a fellow of the design research society.
